Had a spectacular weather day in Branson, Missouri today. We've been struggling with how to describe this place....it may be unique! Its kinda like Las Vegas, but without the vice. But then, not really, since its kinda spread out and you can't walk "the strip"; there's a replica of Godzilla climbing the Empire State Building; an almost full size Titanic; its located in a small town nestled in the Ozarks miles from anywhere. It was the 1907 publication of Harold Wright's novel "The Shepherd of the Hills" that sparked an interest in visiting here. Today, there are more than 100 different shows at 50 theater venues around town. Lots of over-the-top hotels and restaurants. There's lot of patriotic flag waving and evangelical messages as well, and the ubiquitous coupons and hot deals. But NO vices. So, I guess its nothing like Las Vegas.
Anyway, we enjoyed two shows today. This morning we saw James Garrett's "John Denver Tribute" in a small venue called the "Little Opry Theater". It was FANTASTIC! Real accoustic music, by some great musicians, up close and personal. This evening we saw The Haygoods in a much larger house. Very sophisticated, high energy, foot stomping country music. Also great, but left us with an earache! Dinner tonight was at Andy Williams' Grill - we had a great coupon and enjoyed a wonderful "homecooked" meal.
We had some free time this afternoon so we explored Branson Landing, an upscale shopping area on the waterfront (reminded us of Salt Lake city); then drove out to Table Rock Dam on Taneycomo River. Beautiful country!
Tomorrow off to Rocky and maybe a surprise!
