Cross Country Trip 2012: Route 66, Harry's house and Cottey College

This was the first day on our trip that we had real rain....downpours all morning; drizzly and damp all afternoon; thunderstorms at night. Weatherman said it would be 78 - well, it got up to 60! Nevertheless, we explored the northeast corner of Oklahoma and went back into Joplin, Missouri, then north to Nevada, the west into Kansas.

Around Miami, OK, we found a few remnants of the old, now historic, Route 66. At least around here, that's no longer an official route number. Since it was raining so hard, I found it hard to imagine myself speeding down Rt 66 in a '58 Corvette with the top down, wind rushing through my hair, out to save a damsel in distress! Up the road in Lamar, we came across Harry Truman's birthplace anf got a great tour from a volunteer who knew everything about Harry. (Today's trivia question was: who was Harry Truman's V.P.?)

Nevada (pronounced "Nevaada"), Missouri, is the home to Cottey College. Linda is a member of a P.E.O. Chapter in Emmett. One of the missions of this long time women's group is to support education for women, specifically Cottey College. So, since we were in the area, we stopped by. We got a great Campus tour by a young lady from South Carolina. Cottey, founded in 1894, is an all women college with just 300 students. What will please all the women in P.E.O. is that Cottey conspicuously acknowledges their support in many ways. Linda will make a presentation to the Emmett chapter in November.

After a quick stop at the reconstructed Fort Scott on rt 54 we ended the day in Iola, Kansas in the middle of a thunderstorm. We hear there is a forecast for severe storms, maybe tornadoes, tomorrow. What fun!
