After a fine breakfast, we left Judy's house and headed off toward D.C. to find Mt. Vernon, George and Martha Washington's mansion, in Alexandria. Our GPS couldn't find it so we took the "scenic route" but finally arrived. The weather today is warm - 80s - and disgustingly humid! But at least it stopped raining!
We walked all over the estate got a tour of the mansion, and got a good overview of Washington's life as a military hero, sophisticated farmer and land owner, slave owner and, of course, our first President. A very well done exhibit! Interestingly, this is not a "National Park" property, it is owned and managed by the Mt Vernon Ladies' Association since the 1850s.
We ended our day in Front Royal, VA, at the north entrance to Shenandoah Nat'l Park. The afternoon traffic leaving the DC area was horrible! It took us nearly three hours to go that 100 miles. And these folks do this every day!
