Today (actually yesterday, last night's motel didn't have wifi) we had
a wonderful day at Bar Harbor/Acadia Nat'l Park/Mt. Desert Island. Bar Harbor
was host to two cruise ships today so the place was crawling with "old
people". Apparently, this is the busy season for cruise ship visits; they
rarely stop by in the summer - not sure why. We started out by taking a
"trolley tour" in which the guide gave a wonderful talk on the
history of the island, complete with interesting tales of the rich people who
summered there (Rockefellers, JP Morgan, et al). Then he drove up to the top of
Cadillac Mountain for some spectacular views.
We drove all
around the island and got some great views of the classic Maine coastline.
There's a lot to do here so it would be worth a week's vacation some summer!
Carriage rides on the carriage trails, ocean kayaking, biking, hiking/walking,
whale watching, mansion tours, tea and blueberry popovers at Jordan Pond, etc
etc. There are some spectacular hotels here!
We left the
island at 5:00 and ended our day, in the dark and rain, at a funny little motel
in Searsport called "The Baits Motel" (not kidding). We continued to
load up on fish today. For lunch we had clam rolls and fish burgers; for dinner
we had fish & chips and scallops. We are gaining weight and losing muscle
mass.
