We finally drove our way our of the smoke today. By the time we got to Great Falls, it was fairly clear. Montana sure is big! Heading east from Great Falls you go out into the Montana plains - miles and miles of nothing. Until you get to the Missouri River and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. We stayed in Fort Benton, at the famous Grand Union Hotel. Back in the 1880's, this hotel was said to be the finest hotel between Chicago and Seattle! It's been completely refurbished and its gorgeous! Outstanding dinner in the dining room!
Fort Benton was the upper most navigable port on the Missouri. So until the railroads came, almost all freight going the ranchers and miners of the Northwest was unloaded here. It was a very busy place! A lot of it has been restored and they've done a great job telling their story.
An unexpected treat was in Lincoln, a little burg out in the middle of
nowhere between Missoula and Great Falls, where we came across a classic
car show!
